Incompatibility Between the 100/1300 Surge Test and Varistor Failure Rates

چکیده
Significance: Part 2 – Development of standards – Reality checks Demonstration ad absurdum: Accepting the premise of prevalent 100/1300 high-energy surges and modeling the response of typical metal-oxide varistors leads to the conclusion that most of the billions of varistors in service should fail at alarming rates – but we know they do not. Ergo, the premise is not valid. This paper was part of a successful effort to discourage the IEC TC77 from including that 100/1300 test in the regimen of across-the board EMC testing. (See also paper " MOV-VDE" in this Part 2 for an experimental demonstration.)

Testing Varistors against the VDE 0160 Standard
High-energy surge tests have been pe$ormed on metal-oxide varistors of a type in common use, according to a proposed ZEC standard derived from German Standard W E 01 60. l%e surge generator used for the test was a prototype commercial device developed especially to deliver the 1000300 ps waveform speczjied by W E Standard 0160. Depending on the position of the varistor within its manufacturing ...
متن کاملExperimental study of the effects of repetitive surge condition on turbocharger performance
When the mass flow rate through the compressor is reduced at a constant pressure ratio, mass flow rate will drop to an extent that the complete reversal of flow and surge occurs. Recently many research focuses on turbocharger surge, however, there are not enough investigation on the effect of surge on the performance of the turbocharger. The aim of the paper is to investigate the effect of repe...
متن کاملPerformance of Surge Arrester to Multiple Lightning Strokes on Nearby Distribution Transformer
Overhead distribution lines are prone to lightning overvoltages due to their configurations and characteristics. Metal Oxide Varistor (MOVs) arresters for many years have proven to be more advantageous than others arresters in lightning surge protection; therefore it is worthwhile to continually assess the behavior and performance of these arresters to different kind of overvoltages caused by l...
متن کاملSimulation of Combined Shield Wire and MOV protection on Distribution Lines in Severe Lightning Areas
This paper presents the protective effects of shield wire coupled with Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) arresters in a distribution network located in a severe lightning area. The presented test case is the IEEE 34-node radial distribution test feeder injected with multiple lightning strokes and simulated with the Alternative Transients Program/ Electromagnetic Transients program (ATP/EMTP). The resp...
متن کاملModelling of Metal Oxide Surge Arresters in Simulation Software DYNAST
This paper describes the possibilities for mathematical modelling of gap-less surge arresters in the simulation software DYNAST. This tool does not belong to standard modelling softwares in the field of electric power engineering. However, it may provide some key advantages when compared to more frequently used software such as EMTP-ATP and MATLAB-Simulink. Description of the metal oxide varist...
